Audio Editors:: What does everyone use?
I believe that Audacity can be extended using through VST plugins, which greatly expands the capabilities. I have used it in Windows and it is pretty good there. In Linux it is pretty ugly :(

I use OSX, and the audio editor that I use is called Amadeus Pro. It was pretty cheap, and just like most things Mac it is very simple to use, the interface just kind of stays out of your way. You can see the software at http://www.hairersoft.com/AmadeusPro/AmadeusPro.html.

One thing that is annoying with it is that no matter what you have the audio file(s) associated with, the software will associate any files created with itself, so you have to keep going in and manually fixing that with each edited file. Pretty annoying!!!

Wow, weird idea, I never thought about that. You really had people singing local band's music? I suppose if you were going to do that, then it would be something that the club would have to play often and that the regular crowd would have to know well and respond to.

Very interesting, I have not ever thought of this before!

Social Sites to Promote Music [by chip]

Promotion:: Social Sites to Promote Music
Being a newb to promoting music on the web can be a daunting task at best and overwhelming at it's worst. I mean here you are you have poured your heart and soul...your lifeblood into a brand new project and want to share it with the masses!! If you are like me, web promoting becomes an almost insurmountable project in and of itself. No matter how good the project is, promo is no cake walk when you are first starting out. Promoting music is really about networking, establishing a web presence, and developing contacts. It really sucks when you are not sure where to turn or how to do it. To save some time for other newbs out there in the Land of Revolution, here is a list of some social sites to get you started:

May Contain Music small but it hosts music, event info, venue info, and videos

Flotones is small music social network that shares revenue with indie artists. You can browse digital songs, ringtones, music blogs, albums, artists, and mobile wallpapers on the website.

Share The Music a website that hosts over 60,000 songs and acts as the middleman for people that want to share music. The service works in about seven different languages.

SellABand artists can request fans to help fund a music project. You can choose to withdraw the money in between the time of the fund raising efforts up until the Target Budget is reached. Listening to music and browsing the website is free. Currently a Public Enemy rap album is being funded.

JAMGLUE upload music and get attention for upcoming releases. Artists can also build a remix contest campaign around their music. Fans can remix tracks through JamGlue.

ReverbNation a music marketing platform that is used by 500,000 artists, managers, labels, etc. ReverbNation provides free/affordable venues to grow musical influence on the Internet. Along with chart rankings for the local, national and global levels, blogs, fan outreach, song hosting, and profile hosting.

Last.fm was founded in 2002 and was bought by CBS for $280 million in May 2007. Users can create custom radio stations and playlists. Users can build a profile based on their music tastes. Users can also write public and private messages to the Last.fm community. There is a major focus on Groups and Events too.

IMRadio plays the music of local bands from hundreds of cities worldwide. Like a You Tube for music, IMRadio enables all musicians to upload original songs for free radio airplay. Each artist/band registers a brief profile/bio page where they can communicate with their local fans and introduce themselves to a worldwide audience. Listeners hear thousands of original songs being played in local pubs and clubs worldwide. IMRadio is a radio station by musicians for musicians.

These are just a few in no particular order and of course there is MySpace and Facebook Know of any more? Post them.

Re: Non Traditional Promotion Tactics [by chip]

Promotion:: Non Traditional Promotion Tactics
I guess I will start with the first idea.

Has anyone ever thought about promoting through an open source gaming platform? I am wondering if the music is submitted as part of the game's soundtrack what the chances of generating interest in a band might be. Of course there are alot of variables: 1. The song(s) has to be accepted 2. Will there be a game that matches your band's style 3. Can you find a game that is in development? 4. How will the band be credited so people know how and where to find you? 5. How do you know if you have chosen the right game (popularity, target audience, etc.)? There are many more things to consider with this one. However, in my opinion, this could be a viable option for some bands. I personally love games that don't go with the cheesy keyboard stuff all the way through and use real songs like a soundtrack to a movie. Any thoughts?

Re: How do you do with clipping vocals? [by chip]

Audio Editors:: How do you do with clipping vocals?
In an interesting side note (at least to me) I learned what I believe to be the cause of the problem. I am posting it here in case anyone else can learn from it.

I was having a clipping problem with a song we were recording and decided to try a mic stand and some distance. The overall tones began to change drastically no matter the distance and when I went back to the original set up the clipping was actually worse! I had forgot to mention in my original post that the drivers for my sound card had to be reinstalled. When I did this all the settings went back to a default state in essence turning my mic volumes WAY up and resetting the equalizer I had been using on my vocals. I eventually remembered the driver install and when I went in to start checking settings I saw the default settings and was able to correct the problem. So I guess I am saying:

1. Check all the "simple" hardware stuff (settings on knobs on audio/input device, cables, mic, sound card, etc) if for no other reason to eliminate them. If you can, swap out suspect stuff with known working stuff.

2. Check software settings. It might be a good idea to write them down once they are where you like them. At the very least, take a snapshot of your screen and save it on an external or separate storage device if it is software driven.

3. When drivers are installed/reinstalled, they may affect how you record. Adjust the settings (line inputs, etc) on things like sound cards so they are correct to your situation.

4. If you use a separate equalizer on your inputs, check the settings on those, also. Write down the settings when they are where you like them or take a snapshot of the screen and store these on a separate storage device if it is software driven.

5. Document any and all changes to your systems so that troubleshooting can be done easily and quickly. Driver updates, system updates, hardware changes, or even settings changes in case you forget. This was the case in my situation. If I had had that list I could have gone through it and found the problem pretty quickly as opposed to a week of wanting to shoot my PC!!

All of this stuff is helpful in troubleshooting PCs in general. I hope someone finds this helpful at some point. If any one else can add to this for us newbs please feel free to do so!!

Stages:: Indoors or outdoors?
Oh ya, the sound is something that even bothers me to listen to. It can be disorienting when the wind gets swirly and it almost sounds like your ears are popping or something.

Besides, at outdoor shows everyone is eating hot dogs and chicken and al kinds of food that really stinks. I don't like that either.

Promotion:: Slow Recovery on the web!
Hey guys, my new band Slow Recovery needs all of the help getting played on podcasts, the radio, and to continue moving up the Reverb Nation charts as possible!

You can see all of the links at revolution9000.com's SLow Recovery page, but here are the direct links:

Reverb Nation is something that we are really working hard on. We want to continue moving up the charts as much as possible!

IM Radio has been giving up some good play times, check us out and send the moderators for more national plays!

Most of all, email your local radio stations and podcasts to play Slow Recovery! Podcasters can get our music from any location, but a lot of them like getting their music from MusicAlley so we are on there too!

We are also on last.fm. We are still trying to figure out exactly how to maximize our visibility there, so help us out!
